The day we brought Cappy and Matey home (Feb 9, 2004)
Feb 9, 2004 Feb 9, 2004
These are the pregnancy pictures of our 3 1/2 year old dachshund, Matey. She is a short hair boar. The daddy is Cappy, a long hair pie bald (about 4 years old)
She started having contractions last night around 6 pm. Slept and contracted through the night.
This morning around 8 she started to expell a puppy, but only part of the placental sac has become exposed. We called our vet, and he said we should bring her in for a possible C section, but he's booked up in surgery. So will will take her to a nearer vet (who happens to be the founder of our usual vet place)
Here are some past pictures all the way up to this morning.
11am Off to the vet
Matey is in surgery right now. She has four large puppies, all trying to get out at once. More later.
BIG vet bill. We are trying to sell our 26ft macgregor sailboat on Craigslist, so if you know someone looking, point them our direction.
Just got a call from the vet, mommy doing fine, lost a large girl (she was the one trying to be birthed). 3 puppies doing fine. (don't know sexes yet)
We go to pick them up at 3pm, pix to follow.
Pixs are here (and a vid clip!)
They all are basically boar colored, although they all have a little of Cappy's white. One has a very distinct white bib, one has a dashed white center stripe, and one has a small white pinstripe. Don't know if any are long hair or not (doesn't look look like it right now, but they are less than a day old!)
Had a scare on day2 (4 May). Matey popped a set of stitches somehow. Had to take her back to the vet to have her re-sewn.
Matey is fine now (May 5). She wouldn't drink clear water on the 4th until I discovered she loves the Esbilac, so I mixed a little into some water for her. We fed the puppies aroun 1pm, and at 6pm Matey walked over to me with "stuff" hanging out her incision. Panic time! Turns out it was "just" some fatty tissue. After we got her home that night (only last night?), she would eat, but not drink. On the 5th, I went to my mother-in-laws to help with spring cleaning and Jill (my wife) watched the puppies and mommy. Matey still wasn't drinking, so we decided on ice cream (one of her favorites), cottage cheese (she likes yogurt, and it's close. Besides the doc recommended it), and some homemade chicken soup.
She ate 3 bowls (through the day) of rice, puppie food, cottage cheese, and chicken soup all mixed together. For the first time, Matey was full enough to leave food in her bowl! And, she's drinking clear water now also! Looks like the crisis is over.
Our thanks to Big Sky Animal Clinic. (unfortunately, they have no website yet, but they are located off 93 just north of the city airport at 15 18th st E.)
Finally found some bottles by PetAg that work great. Got them at Murdoch's on 93 South.
Newest pictures at the bottom.
